Spanish Onions

A 2 track classic r&b single () — released April 18th 2011 on Popcorn

BACKGROUND More of the curious, cute and catchy Belgian popcorn sound, a style of music which has been growing rapidly in popularity amongst Soul and R&B collectors over the past few years. This time we have a top notch instro! MUSIC Two superb sleaze-soaked popcorn instrumentals from the saxophonist Freddie Mitchell are the order of the day on this cool double header. Beginning his career in the 40s as a bandleader, Mitchell had an extremely prolific spell as a session player and touring band member with many top names of the '50s - LaVern Baker and Ray Charles, just to mention a couple. Tragically, his career was to peter out in the '60s, causing him to take up a job as a taxi driver. Before then however, he released a handful of sides in his own name, and it's surely a great shame that this superior sax man didn't go on to get the glory he deserved. 'Spanish Onions' was a really obscure release on the small Spotlight label, whilst 'Seaweed' was a higher profile but poorly selling issue on ABC Paramount. Both sides feature a cool early 60s sound and super sleazy sax leads from Mitchell.
